Q: Welcome DJ Potatoe! I think a good way to start this off our interview is by asking you
about who you are and what you do.
A: I'm a video game designer & musician of 5 years who's
always been dabbling in fun little side projects involving
gaming, music & art. I currently own and operate Flavor
Grenade Studios, LLC. (www.flavorgrenade.com)
Q: How did you become a Grease 2 fan?
A: Well, I was a strong fan of the first movie and when I
learned there was a sequal, I just had to see it. Honestly,
the first time I saw it, I wasn't very impressed, but after
time, I learned to love it. Now I am a devoted fan.
Q: So you've written other Nintendo-esque game music before?
A: Oh yes! Quite a bit, actually. Sometimes I just feel like
cranking out some 8-bit music. It can be very fun and relaxing.
Q: How about you tell us why you picked to do these songs?
A: Grease 2 has a good soundtrack full of well written and catchy
tunes. I had a thought about maybe turning one of the songs into
a Nintendo melody and chose to do "Score Tonight." After I
completed that I thought that I could do some more and donate them
to this great fan site.
Q: How difficult was it to put these songs together?
A: Well, writing 8-bit game music is tough when you're converting
a song like these. You're limited to only working with 4 instruments-
A lead, a rhythm, a bass and sound effects, or percussion. No 2
percussion instruments can play at the same time, so you have to
be clever in the way you put it together. Also, songs in this fashion
can't be very repetative or the song will get real boring real fast.
Q: Who's your favorite Grease 2 character?
A: Probably Davey Jaworski. he's just a kid who's trying to fit
in with the "older brothers" sorta crowd and trying to make the best
of it. Also, I like his thick silver sunglasses he wears in the
movie's opening during "Back To School." I don't think he got to
sing enough in the film either.
Q: Who's your least favorite character?
A: Hmmm..probably Luis DiMucci. The character just isn't very cool
and his trying to get laid ventures make me think lower of the
character for some reason.
Q: Well, thank you for the songs, DJ Potatoe! I hope we can get more
from you soon!
A: You're welcome, and don't worry...you will.
