Who Am I?
Allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Kirri Liepins; I am 20 years of age and hail from Newcastle, Australia, born and bred Down Under. For the past three years, I have been actively involved in the Australian music industry. In late 2003 I completed my Advanced Diploma in Music Business, achieving Credit standing. I hold down three simultaneous jobs: Newcastle Talent Scout/Members Consultant for Talent Online; a Music Journalist with Uturn Streetpress and a Production Assistant for Australia-Pacific Entertainment Ltd. In addition, I am a percussionist in the successful ensemble Repercussion, I develop websites and I write. Hmmm, now that I look at it, how on earth do I find a free moment to sleep, let alone do so much work on this website? (Sleep? What's that?)
When I need to wind down I write (I have a work in progress that will eventually become a novel), play with my two cats, read anything I can get my hands on, relax with friends in a random coffeehouse, hit the town to see live bands or dance…and, of course, watch movies. I am not a morning person and would barely function without a caffeine hit or three. I love to laugh so hard that I cackle quietly with tears streaming down my face. I miss my best friend, a beautiful young woman who died suddenly in March of this year. I don't enjoy arguments, whether I'm involved in them or not, and endeavour to resolve them quickly. I could very easily become a Bohemian because of my beliefs in truth, beauty, freedom and love. I make a point of learning something new every day - there is nothing like brain food.
I love the 18th century and the 1970's, airports, confusing people, giving and receiving hugs, diversity and eccentricity, late night conversations, sleeping in, taboo subjects, communicating with spirits, Warner Brothers cartoons and shiny things.
Shall I get on with it, then?
So what possessed me to study Apartment Zero and present my research on a website? Well, I don't like to be idle, for one thing. But seriously, a dear friend gave me a copy of the film as a gift. I will never forget my first viewing - I became so engrossed in the film that by the end credits, I felt as though I'd been part of Adrian and Jack's world. The film became an addiction. Being reasonably young, it means that I was not aware of what was happening outside my own country at the time of Apartment Zero. Hell, a four-year-old wouldn't have given a shit about anything else other than what was immediately in front of them. I never digested that side of the news; Argentina, to me, was just a funny word that I happened to hear every now and then. Also, I knew very little about such things as terrorism, mental disorders, homosexuality (one of my favourite subjects), debauchery and classic films. I have developed an inquisitive mind as I have grown up and viewing Apartment Zero sparked an interest in learning more, thus gaining a better understanding of the environment that the film was set in. Thus began my search and my obsessive analysis of the things in the film that seemed important and aroused my curiosity.
Basically, this website is a personal archive of my work. But as I was gathering material for the site, I saw a lack of resources for the film online, and thought that this website could benefit the fans that love the film as much as I do.
I hope that your visit to the site gives you something to think about. Take in as much as you can, but more than anything, I want you to enjoy it.
